Mariapfarr
Mariapfarr is one of the 15 communities in the picturesque Lungau. The village centre lies at an airy 1,119 m above sea level and is thus practically in the middle of the picturesque mountains of the Salzburger Land. Thanks to the exposition in an extensive high valley, the village enjoys many hours of sunshine a year and is even considered the sunniest village in Austria. The pure mountain air and the great location make Mariapfarr a sought-after climatic health resort.A cultural and historical highlight in the town centre is the magnificent pilgrimage church "Unsere Liebe Frau" (engl: "Our Dear Lady"). It is the original parish of Lungau and an important place of pilgrimage in the archdiocese of Salzburg. Attached to the church is the Parish and Pilgrimage Museum, which deals, among other things, with the world-famous Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night", which is said to have been written in Mariapfarr at the beginning of the 19th century. Not only the sacred buildings and museums in the village are worth seeing.
Nature lovers and active sportsmen will find numerous leisure activities in the surroundings. Above all, skiing, but also ski touring, winter hiking, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, horse riding or ice skating is perfectly feasible here. Mariapfarr also offers the Vital- und Wellness-Center Samsunn, an impressive health centre with a sauna landscape.
Lungau
The sunny region of Lungau stretches along a high-plateau in the southern part of the Salzburger Land, and is the perfect holiday region for skiers looking for a variety of levels. Lovely ski areas, well-suited for families with children, but also for more experienced skier offer great opportunities, and an entertaining leisure time programme, are all benefits for spending a holiday in this beautiful region.
